The l shaped piece is what makes the whole thing a zero waste feeder. the bottom of the piece will be attached just high enough off the bottom of the inside of the feeder to allow food in so the chickens can get some. however it needs to be at or below the level of the piece we attached in step 4.. Just added 4 new pullets and man they waste food!! i am scraping it up and putting it back in the feeder every day. using crumbles it just is a total waste if you don't have some way to stop them tossing it all out on the ground..
